CONTEXT
About Dayout
Dayout is a B2C lifestyle mobile app aimed to help people organize and plan-out their days with photos and videos. Users can organize activities together into a group called a “Dayout” and schedule it by using the in-app calendar and reminders.
THE PROBLEM
Onboarding failed to establish a clear understanding of the app’s core concepts, leading users to misinterpret key features.
The onboarding flow introduced features in a broken structure and relied on unfamiliar technical terms that reduced our test participants’ ability to retain information about the key features and form a clear mental model. During testing, some participants struggled to understand the core concepts and were ultimately unclear on what a “Dayout” and an “Activity” is, and how it helps them plan their day. This held the potential to undermine Dayout’s value proposition to first-time users and could lead to lower user activation and retention rates.
THE SOLUTION
Restructured the onboarding slides and further defined the relationship between Dayouts and Activities.
To better set up I worked with my team to determine which onboarding slides were necessary and how to better explain what a Dayout and an Activity are within a 4-week sprint. I chose to cut down the number of onboarding slides from 5 to 3, focusing on explaining both terms in plain language to cultivate a clearer mental model for first-time users.
